Happy bank holiday! Hope youāre enjoying nice weather and walks with your dog.
On the subject of walking, quick dog tip that might change your walksā¦.
Some of you know this already, some donāt⦠Iām actually a trained dog trainer and behaviour advisor.
I donāt offer it as a service (because your dogs already keep me busy enough with walks and adventure days), but I do use that knowledge every single time weāre out. Itās what keeps things fun, safe, and a lot less chaotic.
Funny thing is, I was reading about human behaviour earlier and thought⦠wait, this is exactly what I do with dogs. Not that surprising when you realise we all learn the same way, repetition and consequences.
So hereās something simple you can try š
If your dog āforgetsā their name or ignores recall on walks⦠itās probably not because they donāt know it.
Itās because the walk is too predictable.
Same route. Same pace. Same outcome.
Your dog thinks: āIāve done this before, I know how this goes.ā
Thatās when you get the āzombie modeā dog who is marching ahead, no check-ins, selective hearing suddenly activated.
The fix? Be a bit unpredictable.
āStop randomly
š Change direction for no obvious reason
āļøMix things up, even on familiar routes
š„³ Reward every time your dog checks in with you (a glance, a look back, anything)
Youāre not trying to control every step. Youāre just reminding them that you matter on the walk too.
The result?
A dog that still enjoys the world⦠but keeps one eye on you.
More engagement. Better recall. Less āare you even listening to me?ā moments.
Try it next time youāre out and watch the difference š
